7 Factors to Consider When Choosing Covert Security Cameras

9th Jul 2021

We always want to look for the best in people, but the truth is that you never really know what's happening when you're not in the office.

One business owner, for example, caught his employees stealing $40,000 worth of merchandise from his shop. Although they denied their involvement, the shop's surveillance camera had the proof necessary to convict them of felonies.

How are things going at your business these days? Do you have a team of happy, trustworthy employees? Or do you worry that some of them might be acting dishonestly — maybe even stealing from the company?

Spy cameras for businesses are essential in today's society. If you don't yet have surveillance cameras or spy cameras set up, you're taking big chances with your business.

Here are seven things to consider when choosing spy cameras for your company's needs.

1. Internal & External Environment

First of all, you need to decide where you're going to set up your spy camera. Different cameras are designed for indoor or outdoor use, so you'll need to make sure you choose the right type of camera for the environment.

Some spy cameras are designed to function only in an indoor, climate-controlled environment. If you try to place one outside, it could quickly get damaged (or even destroyed) by the sun, rain, or extreme temperatures.

On the other hand, some cameras are built to withstand direct sunlight and contact with the elements. When comparing camera costs, you also need to compare security camera features to make sure it's suitable for the intended environment.

2. Lighting Conditions & Night Vision

Theft, break-ins, and other nefarious behaviors don't always happen during 9-5 office hours. As you study various options for cameras, you'll want to consider the environment's lighting conditions.

For example, do security lights remain on at your business throughout the night? If not, your spy camera may do little to capture any activities that take place after dark. Even during the day, placing your camera in the wrong spot could cause glare or other issues with the video quality.

The good news is that spy camera providers have already thought of everything. Some spy cameras use infrared technology to illuminate surroundings in low-light settings. Others come equipped with night vision or daylight illumination settings.

If you're not sure what kind of image quality to expect from a certain model, check the Lux rating. The lower the rating, the higher the image quality in low light or dark conditions.

3. Memory & Storage Capacity

This is an often overlooked but very important consideration when choosing spy cameras.

Most models store footage on a removable SD memory card. Depending on the type of camera, it might store anywhere between 2 GB and 64 GB of data. Other models feature built-in memory storage space, which could be useful for storing larger amounts of data.

Think about how often you'll realistically want to (or be able to) access the spy camera to delete unneeded footage. You might also consider how you'll transfer footage, whether it's wirelessly, via the SD card, or from plugging in the camera directly into your computer.

4. Lens Quality & Resolution

Your spy camera isn't going to do you any good if it produces blurry images and silhouettes. You'll need a camera with superior resolution and a high-quality lens if you expect to capture usable footage.

With so much amazing technology available, there's no reason not to invest in a high-definition (HD) quality spa camera. The latest models even produce 4K HD videos (think drone-quality footage).

5. Where You'll Hide the Spy Camera

Spy cameras for businesses are useless if everyone knows they're there. To get the most out of your surveillance efforts, you need to find a way to blend the camera seamlessly with its surroundings.

Here are just a few options for "hidden" spa cameras that are actually in plain sight:

  • Smoke detectors
  • Desktop fans
  • Power outlets
  • Carbon monoxide detectors
  • Exit signs
  • Toolboxes
  • Wall clocks
  • Air fresheners
  • USB charging stations

Can you see the potential value of hiding a camera in such ordinary objects? No one would give any of these items a second look, let alone suspect there's a camera hiding inside.

6. Battery Powered or AC-Powered

Many spy cameras are fully battery-powered, while others need to be plugged in to operate. Some hybrid models work both ways, so you need to carefully consider which type makes the most sense for your intended location.

Each type of camera has its pros and cons. Battery-powered cameras are great because you can place them anywhere, but you need to make sure they're sufficiently charged first.

If you're the forgetful type (or you just don't want to be bothered), it might make more sense to stick with an AC-powered security camera.

7. Other Security Camera Features to Consider

Time would fail us if we tried to list all possible options for cameras. In addition to the points we discussed above, you may also want to think about these features too:

  • Wireless streaming vs self-recording cameras
  • Color images vs black-and-white images
  • Whether you need live viewing options
  • Whether you want to record audio or not
  • Whether the camera is motion-activated or not

As you can see, there are a lot of factors to consider when choosing the perfect spy camera for your business. Fortunately, you don't have to go it alone!
